Dr. Marius Barnard was a renowned South African heart surgeon, who saw many of his patients suffer financially after having been treated for critical illnesses. He realised a need that people had for financial protection when they had been seriously ill. He managed to convince insurance companies the need to introduce a new type of insurance to cover critical illness. Dr Barnard argued that, 'as a medical doctor, he can repair a man physically, but only insurers can repair a patient’s finances'.
